Walk With Me Through 2020...

Oh, 2020. You were...special.

SO much happened this year. When I sat down to write this post, I kept thinking, "Oh my gosh. That was this year?" It just seemed like the never-ending year, and we had so much personal family change too. From a global pandemic, to the return of my Crohn's Disease, to Mike's new job...I never would have predicted that 2020 would end with us living in Virginia. Definitely didn't see that one coming :)

While 2020 was full of surprises and unknowns and life-changing events, it was also the year I learned {again} to appreciate all that I have been given. There's something about being forced into quarantine that makes you pause and reflect. There's something about getting sick that makes you re-evaluate what's important. And there's something about packing up your life and moving across the country in less than ideal circumstances that makes you remember all of the grace and mercy that you experience daily.

Past reviews: 2009201020112012201320142015201620172018, 2019

I kicked off January by reflecting on the goals I had set and the books I had read the previous year. It was also a good time for me to stop and reflect back over all that had happened in the previous decade. It was a good way to mark the gifts the Lord had provided. We were in the midst of toddler crazy-town, and I seemed to think it was hard then...haha, little did I know... :)  I started to suspect my Crohn's was back, but I was still trying to convince myself that it was something else.

In February, we started our second semester of Toddler School, and we continued working toward our goal of reading 1,000 books before Kindergarten. In an effort to correct her strabismus, our sweet Maddie girl got glasses, "double gum pink" glasses, to be exact. She wasn't too sure at first, but she eventually rocked them like a pro! Aiden turned 1.5 years, and we celebrated by a fun trip to the park. We were busy with BSF, and community group, trips to the Crayola Experience, and just going about normal life.

Everything in the world changed in March. We got to experience a fun weekend with Grandma, out and about, like normal, before everything shut down. We had been hearing reports about the COVID-19 virus, but lockdowns started to happen, and we were advised to stay home, to socially distance from people to "flatten the curve." We couldn't find toilet paper or hand sanitizer in the stores, but we were able to stay home as a family, and our kids weren't too affected. While we were trying to figure out the seriousness of all that was happening, we tried to make the best of our time at home. The neighborhood did a lot of "socially distant" activities, we went on a lot of family walks, and we played outside A LOT. We also decided to tackle potty training.

Lockdowns continued in April, and most of our activities shifted online. We celebrated Easter at home and continued enjoying time outside: playing in the backyard, playing with sidewalk chalk, and going on walks. I celebrated 8 years working for the bank, I broke the side mirror on our SUV backing out of the garage {because it had been SO long since I had driven anywhere}, and drive-by birthday celebrations became the norm. We decorated our car and drove by Granny's house to wish her a happy birthday!

In May, they started opening up businesses/life in phases, but we continued to stay home and be cautious. Our kids were living their best lives with all the outside time, and we were so thankful that we were stuck at home with amazing weather! We were battling nap time shenanigans, and we started separating Eli and Maddie at nap time. We ventured out {in masks} for eye appointments, and learned that Maddie girl was going to need surgery for her strabismus. We were all nervous, but overall, she did really well in handling the COVID test, the actual surgery, and the recovery.

We were still socially distancing in June, and we were so thankful that we both able to work from home still. We had the opportunity to take front porch photos, a trend that was happening among photographers as a way to record this unique time in history. It was starting to get hot, so a lot of our outside activities involved popsicles and water; we pulled out our water table and got a new fun splash pad. Sasha turned 13 years old, and we got to celebrate Mike with a fun at-home Father's Day. I also had a colonoscopy that confirmed that my Crohn's was, in fact, active again. We got a special treat with a visit from Grandma and Papa; they were willing/able to quarantine for 2 weeks before coming to visit, and we were so happy to see and HUG them!

In July, we hit our goal of reading 1,000 books before Kindergarten! We participated in an at-home VBS, and the kids had so much fun. Fourth of July was pretty quiet, as we were still social distancing, but we were still able to dress up in red, white, and blue. Our at-home adventures continued with a hot air balloon sighting and with a turtle rescue! Mike and I celebrated our 9th anniversary with a fun at-home pottery date. We enjoyed dinner, cheesecake, and painting a few pottery pieces. As a fun summer treat, we introduced the kids to ice cream sundaes. I also started my Entyvio infusions, trying to make steps toward healing.

We celebrated National Watermelon and National Waffle Days in August. Our sweet Aiden turned 2 years old, and we celebrated with a fun Pooh Bear day! We got to attend a drive-by wedding shower for some sweet friends, we learned that Eli likes classical music, and we enjoyed some garage picnics with Granny and Grumpz. We lost power one night and tried to make it fun with a flashlight picnic dinner. It was also really hard when my family had to say good-bye to my Grandpa, but I am thankful I was able to be there with my family. I didn't blog about it at the time, but Mike was interviewing with Chantilly Bible Church in August.

We started our second year of Toddler School in September. We hadn't made any public announcements yet, but Mike accepted the position as Executive Pastor at CBC, so we were in a whirlwind of packing and prepping to sell our house. I was still trying to figure out my health stuff, so I had a CT scan and an abdominal MRI.

In October, we put our house on the market, and continued packing and prepping to move across the country. It was a crazy busy month, full of goodbyes and lasts and changes. Mike and I made a quick weekend trip to Virginia to find a place to live, and we sent most of our belongings ahead of us in PODS, while we lived in an empty house with the bare minimum. Oh, and I threw in an upper endoscopy for good measure. Just the beginning of our adventures, as we officially hit the road on October 31st :)

We said goodbye to Texas and made the trek to Virginia in November. We celebrated Eli and Maddie's 4th birthday while on the road, but I think they enjoyed our stay on a little goat farm. Grandma and Papa made the drive with us, and they were able to spend a few days with us as we settled into our temporary place. We moved into an extended stay until our rental place is available in the new year, so we started figuring out life in a tight space with 3 kiddos and a dog. Mike started his new job, and we started our new life in Virginia! We had a quiet Thanksgiving with our little family of 5, and we continued learning about our new home.

December was jam-packed with Christmas fun! While we were not able to put up our usual decorations or celebrate with our usual traditions, we were able to do a lot of really fun activities to make it feel like Christmas in our little hotel room. I was still really struggling with my health, starting a new medication and trying to determine if my infusions were actually working, so there were a lot of really hard days. But I am really glad that we had a fun Christmas bucket list to keep us all distracted and in relatively good cheer! We missed being with family for Christmas, but we are thankful for the time we had as our little family of 5, and the technology to "see" everyone on Christmas. We wrapped up December ready to countdown to our next move into our rent house in January. It can't get here soon enough! :)

2020 was a WILD year. As I reflect back on all that happened, I am amazed at God's unending grace to us. We have so many plans and expectations and hopes for 2021, but we also know that we need to hold all of it loosely, surrendering every bit of our own plans to Him. We truly have no idea what next year holds, but we are excited to be on this journey together as a family, and we look forward to finding out together!

Extended Stay hotel life: living room/dining room/play room/Aiden's bedroom

Silly boy

Out on a walk, exploring the area

My parents sent a fun new mug and a box of teas! It has been so fun to try all the different teas, and it has been the perfect way to warm up as the weather gets colder.

Maddie reading to her "stuffies"- she remembers the storylines from the books we read, but she has started making up her own fun stories :)

Eli and Maddie had their 4 year check up with our new pediatrician in Virginia, and they got to wear these cute little gowns {and yes, they were definitely open in the back. And yes, we did have to make a trip to the potty down the hall with their rears hanging out in the back haha!}

Aiden got to stay home with Daddy while Eli and Maddie were at that appointment. But he didn't mind at all; he soaked up ALL the Daddy snuggles he could :)

Best of buddies. Sasha looks innocent here, but she pooped crayons for days #sneakingcrayons

Reading with Daddy :)

Speaking of reading...Aiden hit his first 100 books in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge! He loves books, he just doesn't have a long enough attention span to read through all of the same ones as his brother and sister. But we have started! And in true third kid fashion...he gets a handwritten {with crayon} sign and a footnote in an {iPhone Rewind} post. I am keeping track of his books in the app too, but it's the same list as Eli and Maddie, so there is no need to post a duplicate list here.

We got to go play at one of the elder's houses, and the kids got to run wild and free in their backyard :)

"Look, Mommy! I drew our whole family!"

Pretty girl

This old lady went on an adventure: she got out of the hotel room and I lost her for an hour! Thankfully she found her way to the front desk, so we found her safe and sound. But goodness she shouldn't be going on those grand adventures at her age {13...91 in human years!}

Well this is a fun new weather forecast :)

His little hands! He really enjoys listening to classical/instrumental music. He really focuses in on it, asking about all of the different instruments.

Uncle Michael sent us a video of the really big Christmas tree on DBU's campus!

How we found him after nap time

She has been spending nap time in the room with me {because she keeps her brothers awake and tends to get into trouble in her room}. She fights sleep like no other, but still really needs a nap. She spent most of this nap running laps back and forth in the room before she literally just crashed.

Parenting is hard. Toddlers/preschoolers are crazy. Blizzards are amazing. Blizzards in the car all by myself are even more amazing. New Christmas Eve Eve tradition for Mommy? I think so!

Enjoying all of their fun new books!

"Mommy, take a picture of me reading to Aiden!"

When Chick Fil A calls you out...

There's a working farm right around the corner from us! It's a great place to walk the trails and see the animals...and it's free :)

When you're supposed to be napping, but at least you're talking quietly with each other :)

Embryo Adoption :: Our Journey {2020}

This year we were in the thick of parenting 2 preschoolers and a toddler! And it was every bit as crazy and busy as you might think :)

But this year also brought a little more understanding to their Embryo Adoption story. They know they are adopted, which right now to them means that "mommy and daddy wanted me and picked me out." But we also started seeing glimpses of their little brains processing the science side of things. We explained that mommy and daddy needed help to have a baby, that they were frozen as an itty bitty embryo, and were waiting in the freezer for mommy and daddy to come get them.

As they grow and understand more, we will expand on our explanations, but for now, it is sweet to see their little wheels turning as they process their story. We pray that they grow to love their story, the story God has crafted for them, and that they are always excited about all that God has done for our family.

July 9, 2020: A reminder of God's perfect timing {God kept me in remission for Crohn's long enough to have all of my babies, a sweet gift in our Embryo Adoption journey}

July 31, 2020: I was frozen in the refreezerator! {Maddie's first understanding/processing of being a teeny tiny, frozen embryo}

Again, I don't have as many links for Embryo Adoption, as we are in the midst of parenting, not growing our family anymore. But I want to document even the few steps in our journey, as we are all learning along the way. I did want to also remember this year that Eli and Maddie continually asked me "am I your snowflake, Mommy?" Yes, my baby loves, you will forever be my snowflake babies, and I am so thankful for how God brought you to me and Daddy!

Christmas Bucket List Wrap-Up

We had a really great first Christmas in Virginia! We were able to check off everything on our bucket list, as well as add a few more items. We missed being with family, and it felt different to be in a new place. But we are so thankful for our new church family and friends here, and we look forward to exploring more of the area, taking part in all the fun Christmas traditions in Virginia!

Sing Christmas carols
No photo, but we have been singing Christmas carols since the day after Thanksgiving! It's fun that the kiddos ask to listen to Christmas music. Their favorite is to watch this video of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing live at the Helix in Dublin. They ask for it every night before bed :)

Find a really big Christmas tree
Also no photo, but I forget that size is relative to my kids. We saw lots of big Christmas trees when we were out driving around {most of the shopping centers have a large one displayed}, we just were never able to get out and get photos. But they were just as {if not more} excited about the tiny ones in the lobby of our hotel. Or the one from the video Uncle Michael sent us from the DBU campus.

BONUS FUN:
Play with the Little People Nativity set
A sweet family in the church let us borrow their Little People Nativity set, and we had so much fun with it! It's one of the original sets, with the larger stable, shepherd, extra sheep, cow, and another angel. That was fun for Mommy, because those pieces are hard to find!

Watch Merry Christmas Charlie Brown
A fun family tradition! We were sad that they took it off regular channels, but thankfully there was enough uproar over that for the Halloween special, that they made it available for free on Apple TV for a set amount of time. It won't be a problem next year, as we'll have our DVD copy back out of storage :)

Read Christmas books
We got some fun new Christmas books in the mail from Grandma and Papa! The kiddos also got some new Christmas ones on Christmas morning. I have started a collection of Christmas books that I hope to add to every year.

Mrs. Debbie's crafts
Mrs. Debbie sent home some more Christmas crafts for us to make!

Watch The Star
Grandma recommended this cute little movie to us, and we loved it! The Star is a cute animated film about the birth of Jesus, from the animals' perspective.

Christmas 2020

This was our first Christmas in Virginia! Because we are still in a temporary space, and we are still under COVID restrictions, this year looked quite a bit different, even aside from being away from family and friends. But we tried to make the best of it, and I think we still made some fun memories with the kids!

Mike had to work on Christmas Eve {welcome back to pastoral ministry!}, so the kids and I did some fun activities when I got back from my infusion. I hid some candy canes around the hotel room and we had our very own candy cane hunt! Super simple, and the kiddos loved it. I'd like to try to do this outside next year {it was pouring down rain all day on Christmas Eve this year}, but I don't think anyone noticed...they were just looking for those candy canes!

I bought Starburst flavored candy canes, (1) because Mommy doesn't like peppermint, and (2) the package had 3 different flavors/colors = one for each kid. Each kid could hunt for their assigned color, without anyone getting more than the other. Mom hack, right there. You're welcome :)

Anxiously waiting to be "released" to start hunting candy canes

Aiden was ready to try his candy cane!

We watched the Christmas Eve service online, and I am so glad we were able to join our new church family this way. Even though we couldn't be there in person this year, we are thankful we still got to participate in all the Christmas carols, Scripture reading, and candlelight service. The kids thought it was so fun to see Daddy on TV haha!

Waiting for the livestream to start

Intently listening to the piano playing

"Hey, that's Daddy on the TV!"

Christmas morning, we had breakfast, decorated our {felt} Christmas tree, and then opened presents. We kept it simple this year, as we don't have a lot of space for new things right now, and it was really easy to do that with our 3 gift tradition. Each kid got something to create with, something to read, and something to wear. And we added 1 family gift of something to play with {a game to play together}.

I usually wrap the kids' presents in their own wrapping paper. I picked out one for Aiden that had dinosaurs on it, but it turned out to be impossible to rip open. Poor kid! He needed lots of help to get his presents open, and that's the last time Mommy buys that type of wrapping paper again haha!

So excited for presents!

I love that they love books :)

Daddy opening his gifts!

We got to Zoom with Granny and Grumpz, and then Grandma, Papa, and Uncle Michael. It was sad that we couldn't be together in person, but we are so thankful that we are still able to "see" each other for Christmas. It definitely doesn't replace being in person, but it's a sweet blessing to have the technology to enjoy some time together.

We got to FaceTime with our cousins later in the day, and it was good to be able to say "Merry Christmas" to everyone. The kids enjoyed reading their new books {and playing with all the boxes and wrapping paper}, and we wrapped up our day with our first game of Chutes and Ladders and a little hot chocolate :)

Christmas looked different this year, in so many ways. But we are grateful for the unchanging God who sent His Son so we could be adopted into one family. Merry Christmas!
