The Trains at NorthPark

This week we met Granny and our cousins to see The Trains at NorthPark! While we were waiting for our cousins to get there, we walked around the mall for a bit. It was fun to see all the Christmas decorations, and I love that whenever Eli and Maddie see a Christmas tree, they point and yell excitedly "Christmas!!" We even got to hear some live holiday orchestra music.

Eli and Maddie loved the trains! It was a pretty small exhibit, but there were lots of fun displays that included kid-friendly finds {like Mickey and Minnie Mouse}. They especially loved getting to push the display buttons to make parts of the exhibit move and/or light up. Aiden was happy as long as I kept feeding him crackers haha.

We grabbed lunch in the food court afterward, and while it was a little crazy {crowds, toddlers, etc}, it was still a fun adventure with our cousins!

Some More Sweet Family Photos

A few months ago, we had the opportunity to take some family photos with Mike's side of the family. We had given the gift of family photos to Granny and Grumpz, and we finally found a time that we could get everyone together!

Unfortunately, the photo shoot was right in the middle of Aiden's nap time, it was a hot and humid day, Maddie doesn't do well in large groups {particularly when multiple people are telling her to "smile!" over and over}, and it just took too long for my toddlers to handle. So while I am very happy that we got one good family of five photo...I am sad that my children are not looking at the camera or are crying in every photo with the rest of the family. Sigh.

Maybe next time...many, many years from now :)

{Crohn's Awareness} :: #IBDvisible

It's the first week of December, so that means it's Crohn's and Colitis Awareness Week!

This year, their campaign is #IBDvisible, attempting to increase disease familiarity. Here's a handy little graphic to share my IBD story :)

I am an IBD patient.
I have Crohn's Disease, which is an Irritable Bowel Disorder. It is an incurable disease that causes chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. My body mistakes harmless bacteria for foreign invaders; so my immune system tries to defend my body against helpful microbes by mistake. This leads to the chronic inflammation. While diet and stress can aggravate Crohn's, they do not cause the disease.

I wasn't familiar with IBD before being diagnosed.
I feel like that's pretty common with IBD. That's why we need to raise awareness! When I was in the hospital, my GI suspected Crohn's, but I didn't know what that was {and I didn't even know how to spell it haha!}. But then the tests came back positive for Crohn's, so I found myself diving into the IBD world, learning as much as I could about this disease and how to manage it.

It took 20 months to be diagnosed.
I marked this as when I started experiencing symptoms. I didn't actually start looking for answers with a doctor for about 16 months. I had seen a doctor of internal medicine, had several tests done, and cleared out a case of H. Pylori. I had been referred to a GI, but never made it to that appointment. I was only a few days from my scheduled appointment when Mike found me on the bathroom floor, curled up in the fetal position. So we called the office, and the GI had us meet him at the hospital that day, where I was diagnosed.

My most debilitating GI symptoms include...
...constipation, rectal bleeding, and abdominal pain. Thankfully, since I have been in remission, I have not experienced these symptoms in several years. But I remember these symptoms being a part of my daily life for almost 2 years. And at the time, they were incredibly debilitating. It was difficult to function on some days, and I lived in a chronic state of pain.

Other symptoms that trouble me include...
...fatigue, low energy, and decreased appetite. I feel like these have followed me, even into remission. Of course, the fatigue and low energy could also be due to having 3 little ones running around, but I had that before kids. So I can't fully blame them. But I do think they are related to my Crohn's. While I am in remission, I am not cured, so I think that my body is still fighting that immune response, fighting off that inflammation. And the decreased appetite is just part of life now. I rarely feel hungry, so I have to force myself to eat regularly. I felt hunger again during my pregnancies, but now that I am a full year postpartum, I have reverted to the lack of feeling hunger.

The aspects of my life most affected by IBD include...
...the cost of my medication. I meet my deductible every year during the first month because of the cost of my medication. If I didn't have insurance, I would pay the amount of my deductible every month. So while it is a pain to have to always have that money ready in January, I am incredibly thankful for insurance. And in the grand scheme of things, this is really not that big of a deal. I think back to that agonizing pain before my diagnosis and subsequent remission, and I remember how that affected my whole life. How I felt that day affected whether I went somewhere, could make it through work, or simply get things done around the house. With the help of my medication {costly as it is}, I can live a normal life, pain free! And that is an incredible blessing, that I hope not ever to take for granted.

Advent 2019

For Advent this year, we are pulling out our Jesse Tree again! We are reading through The Jesus Storybook Bible and filling our mini tree with ornaments. This is actually our only Christmas tree this year, as we decided not to spend the season fighting with all the toddlers. Maybe next year...

We are also doing The Shepherd's Treasure. We did the Lost Sheep version at Easter, but it actually started as a Christmas thing. Eli and Maddie loved the Easter version, so I think they will enjoy the Christmas version as we countdown to Christmas. It has been fun to already hear their anticipation as we get ready to "count down to Jesus' birthday!" They have enjoyed a lot of birthday festivities over the past month or so, so they can already connect the celebration aspect for Jesus. I love seeing the little seeds of the gospel already growing in their hearts.

For me personally, I am doing the daily readings from Gentle Leading again. This year's theme is "A Thrill of Hope." It's supposed to explore how the coming of Christ brings us hope in areas of motherhood that often leave us feeling defeated. I really enjoyed last year's advent readings, so I am looking forward to these ones!

2019 Goals :: November Check-In

I'm pushing through to the end of the year! I'm ready for these check-ins to be done, anyone else? :)

Goal #1: Drink 60oz of water every day
I think my "normal" is about 30oz per day, which is about half of where I need to be. So I think it's official that I didn't hit this goal this year... and yet, I don't think it's a complete loss. I think overall, I drank more water on a daily basis than I normally do {except when I was pregnant}. I'll just keep working on it.

Goal #2: Increase my fitness level
Still about the same as last month. We had some really lovely weather that allowed us to take more walks and get outside. But that was about the extent of my fitness this month. And while it's still something I want to do better with and incorporate into my daily life, I don't feel as stressed about it anymore. I know this is just a season {a short one, at that}, and so once my kiddos are a little older and more self-sufficient, I think this will be easier to accomplish in a way that I really want to, rather than in a "make it work however I can right now" kind of way. And I'm ok with that {for now}.

Goal #3: Listen to the Audio Bible daily
This month I listened to Acts 12-15, the book of 1 Peter, and Galatians 2.

Goal #4: Read 55 Books
I read 3 books this month.

Goal #5: Participate in the #150hoursoutside project
We had some beautiful weather this month, which meant some good time outside! Of course, we also had some super cold days that kept us bundled up inside, but we tried to take advantage of the nice weather when we could! :)

Goal #6: Do something creative every month
I didn't do much creatively this month, but the bulk of it was for Eli and Maddie's birthday party. I also worked on some aprons and shirts with a company logo for my sister-in-law. She was show-casing her cookie decorating at an artisan fair and wanted to have her new company logo on some shirts and aprons. That was just a simple iron-on project, but still fun!

Goal #7: Be more intentional with discipling Eli and Maddie
We still make every effort to get to BSF every week. We have had to miss some due to sickness, but we are looking forward to continuing the last few weeks strong! We finished up the names of God cards from Tiny Theologians, and then we took a little break. We're gearing up for Advent, and we have lots of things planned for that!
