{30 before 30} :: Encourage Another Church Planting Wife

I put this one on the list because it was something I desperately wished I had while we were planting. While my husband received a ton of support and encouragement from local church planters, I unfortunately did not. And that was hard. And lonely. The women at Redeemer were encouraging, but there is a different kind of need for pastor's wives that members of the church cannot offer, simply by nature of roles and ministry.

Acts 29 desires to be helpful to wives, but the actual implementation is a bit challenging. I went to a wives' tea the fall before we launched, and I met some wonderful ladies, but that was it. There was no follow up, and I haven't seen most of them since then. It's not Acts 29's fault, it's just difficult for church planting wives to find time to network with each other, especially since we're all spread out throughout the metroplex. And since we never achieved full-member status, we did not have access to the retreats, which is where I think most of the wives connect.

Working full time, launching the church, and monitoring my health made connecting with other church planting wives fall down on the list of priorities. I was fairly exhausted, and all of my energy was going to ministering to the women at Redeemer. I also struggled with knowing what I had to offer. I desperately needed encouragement from someone who was further in the process {and quite frankly, outside of our process}, so I felt at a loss. We had just started our church planting journey, and then a few short months later it was over. What encouragement could I offer another church planting wife, when our church plant didn't make it?

When we were a few weeks past the close of Redeemer, the Lord placed this on my heart again. And he placed a fellow sister on my heart, the church planting wife of a church with whom we have had close ties for a couple of years. We have talked often about getting together, but life and schedules had just prevented it from happening...until I made the conscious decision to not let it anymore. We had our first official hang out, and I am so thankful for this sweet gal. It was like meeting with a kindred soul. I really wish I hadn't waited so long to make the time to meet a priority.

I don't know exactly what I will have to offer her by way of encouragement, but I do understand some of the unique struggles of being a church planting pastor's wife. And that is a priceless gift that I don't want to waste. More than once, she has told me, "You just get it!" And I do :)

Whether it's just coffee to hang out and talk, or sending her encouraging emails or fun care packages, I hope that I can be an encouragement to her. Just knowing that there is someone there and available to talk and listen would have been an encouragement to me. Or knowing that someone was praying for me and the specific challenges of church planting ministry...my prayer is that I can be that for her.

Jesus is Calling...

A new pretty cupcake calendar for the new year? Yes please! :)

I changed out my calendar at work this morning, and I have to say that my new cupcake-a-month calendar makes me very happy. But it also meant I was back to reality. Holidays and vacation time are over, and it is time to get back into the swing of things. But while "normal" life may be resuming, there is definitely a sense of a fresh start and new beginnings. I know, isn't that usually how a new year works? :)

I have never really been one to make new year's resolutions. It's not that I don't have goals, it's just that over the years, I have needed to shift my focus a bit. In the past, my goals have tended to be self-focused (in a bad way), and I spent a lot of time and effort seeking my own agendas and things I thought were important...only for the Lord to direct me otherwise. So I'm not against goals; goals are good to have. I just tend to feel constrained by resolutions made at the first of the year. That's probably weird, but I can't help it. So I typically skip the new year's resolutions, and just start new things and set new goals whenever the Lord lays them on my heart. It keeps my thoughts a little more focused, allowing me the freedom to wait on the Lord and follow His leading. Whatever works, right? ;)

With that being said (goals or not), there is undoubtedly something refreshing about the start of a new year. A fresh start and new beginnings. The last few months have been a whirlwind, and I feel as though I have been in survival mode. The transition away from friends and community and into a more intense work commute proved to be more difficult than I had anticipated. There were many days when this routine-loving (and somewhat routine-dependent) girl struggled to make it through without feeling like I was completely losing my mind. My heart became complacent, and I allowed my circumstances to dictate my attitude (in a negative way). I lost sight of my purpose and my blessings. And what is usually the case when I lack discipline and focus, my sinful heart bred frustration, discontent, a complaining spirit, and a prideful heart. Yuck. Double Yuck.

Enter my saving grace.

I praise God for His abundant (and absolutely undeserved) grace and mercy. That He doesn't allow us to continue in our sin, and that He disciplines those He loves (= me). That His Word is true and faithful, meant "for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." A few weeks ago, I started a study of the book of James with my sweet friend Laura. In many ways, she has been an unending source of encouragement to me. From listening to me complain and gently helping me recognize my sin, to lovingly walking through this transition time with me...the Lord has definitely used her to speak to me.

We have been walking through the book of James, and it has been like a salve for my soul. Partly because James has some strong and convicting words that I have long needed to hear, but mostly because I needed to be back in a consistent study of the Word. I have been praying for the return of a deep longing and hunger for His Word (because my confession is that I lost it for awhile), and He has been faithful to provide it.

I told Laura the last time we met to talk through our study that I feel as though a cloud has lifted. I can't tell you what has changed; nothing about my circumstances have changed. But I can tell you that it is a relief, accompanied by peace and hope, that I am certain comes only from the Lord. That's not to say that the days ahead won't be difficult; I will have to diligently seek the Lord and rely on Him to stay focused. But He has encouraged my heart and has provided the strength I need to face the days ahead with a renewed sense of purpose and hope.

In addition to studying James with Laura, I am walking through a Bible-In-A-Year plan. I actually haven't worked through a specific plan in several years, so I am excited to be purposeful in making it through the entire Bible in one year. This specific plan walks through 6 different sections of the Bible in a week (Poetry, Pentateuch, Old Testament History, Prophets, New Testament History, Epistles). It's a different approach that I am pretty excited about. For Christmas, my mom gave me a devotional written by Sarah Young called "Jesus Calling." It's a collection of words and Scriptures that Jesus laid on the author's heart. A little like when I wake up to whispers from God or He places a song on my heart. Her journey of transforming her prayer life into more of a dialogue (as opposed to a monologue) is written as if Jesus Himself is talking to you. Perfect for where I am right now.

The Lord has repeatedly brought to mind the following verses...

"Be still and know that I am God..."
Psalm 46:10

"Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!"
Psalm 105:4

So my charge for the coming weeks is to simply LISTEN. To relearn how to be in and experience the presence of God. Jesus is calling....I want to be ready to listen and hear His voice.

The Glory of My God

I was in Seattle last week for work and was able to sneak away for a few minutes to walk along the waterfront. I have been here before, but every time I stand on the pier and look out across the Puget Sound, I am amazed at just how absolutely beautiful it is.

I love the feeling of standing at the edge of beauty, be it the ocean shore, the base of a mountain, or even the grandeur of a sunset...you know, the overwhelming realization of how insignificant you really are. It's certainly humbling, slightly terrifying, and yet altogether peaceful. Because I know Who is truly significant. And I am reminded of how great my God is and how utterly lost I am without Him.

When I get to enjoy the rare moments of seeing how the heavens declare His glory and how His creation proclaims without question His handiwork, I cannot help but worship my God. And I am so thankful for the reminders He gives through His creation.

"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork."
~ Psalm 19:1

"Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all."
~ 1 Chronicles 29:11

A Little of This, A Little of That...

Girls Weekend in SA
It has definitely been a busy weekend/week! As I mentioned last week, I was heading to SA to spend a girls weekend with two sweet friends from college. It was fun to see Nicki and to just spend some time hanging out in SA. It was a whirlwind weekend, but I am thankful for the time I had to spend with family/friends.

With Nicki at Cosi for Lunch

With Laura at Rita's on the Riverwalk

Trip to Atlanta
I got home late on Sunday, just in time to unpack and repack for my work trip to Atlanta. My mom came into town to help my brother with his move and also take care of Sasha while I was traveling. It was fun to have her around, evne if I only got to see her briefly. I spent a couple of days in training for work...I walked away very confused, but did learn that I am not a computer programmer and do not speak computer geek. Haha- oh well...it is nice to get out of the office now and then.

One of the fun blessings of the trip was that I got to reconnect with a friend from my Community Leader days at Baylor. My old hall director Shannon just moved to the Atlanta area to start her PhD work in higher education. Shannon was such a sweet blessing to me in college. While she was technically my boss, she became a close friend and confidant while I was working in North Russell hall. She was such an encouragement to me, and she was definitely that person I could go to for spiritual wisdom and advice. I am so thankful that the Lord allowed us to reconnect!

Me and Shannon back in our residence life days :)

LOL- Shannon had our staff camp out in the quad in January- good times!

I am so thankful that God provided a free evening for me to spend catching up with her! We were able to grab dinner and just talk about all the Lord had done in each of our lives since we last saw each other.

More Hospital Bills :(
So I know that if you're reading this you probably don't care, but I just need a moment to vent. I talked about feeling under attack a few weeks ago and just overwhelmed with bills from my hospital visit after Nicaragua. The Lord was good to provide a payment plan for those original bills, and I am working to get that amount paid down. Well, yesterday I received yet another bill in the mail- this one a separate bill from the ER doctor. Again, the Lord has provided a payment plan, but I am really hoping that this is the last one I see; I don't think I could handle another one. I have to keep reminding myself of God's provision and care for me while I was sick. I am just overwhelmed with this unplanned expense and just frustrated with having to deal with it right now. I'm glad I am a good budgeter...?

Sweet Encouragement
I was able to have dinner with a sweet friend from my 20s group last night- the lovely Miss Katie Miller :) I am so blessed to know this beautiful girl! She is such an amazing example of a godly woman, and I am always challenged whenever I talk with her. She has such a desire to deepen her relationship with the Lord and help others do the same. She has a gift of encouraging others with Scripture and sharing words of wisdom. It had been way too long since we had hung out just the two of us, so I was very thankful for the time I had with her last night.

Missing Mike
More evidence I am officially turning into a girl: I really miss Mike! Haha :) I was in SA last weekend and then Atlanta this week, and he was able to take some time off and spend the week in Colorado...so I won't get to see him until Monday. I am really glad he was able to take this trip, but ten days is a long time...we have talked on the phone and I have been able to see Colorado through the pictures he sends, but it's just not the same. Sigh. /End girliness ;) I am definitely looking forward to seeing him when he gets back!

Quiet Weekend
I am looking forward to a quiet weekend...I am purposely not making a ton of plans so I can spend the time catching up on sleep, laundry/cleaning, etc. It will be nice to not be rushing off to a ton of places for a few days...hope you are able to enjoy a relaxing weekend!

Moment by Moment Obedience

A sweet friend from our 20s group emailed me some encouraging words from a devotional she had read. She was reading from one of my favorites My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. Here is an excerpt from what she shared with me:

What is my vision of God’s purpose for me? Whatever it may be, His purpose is for me to depend on Him and on His power now. If I can stay calm, faithful, and unconfused while in the middle of the turmoil of life, the goal of the purpose of God is being accomplished in me. God is not working toward a particular finish— His purpose is the process itself. What He desires for me is that I see “Him walking on the sea” with no shore, no success, nor goal in sight, but simply having the absolute certainty that everything is all right because I see “Him walking on the sea” ( Mark 6:49 ). It is the process, not the outcome, that is glorifying to God.

God’s training is for now, not later. His purpose is for this very minute, not for sometime in the future. We have nothing to do with what will follow our obedience, and we are wrong to concern ourselves with it. What people call preparation, God sees as the goal itself.

God’s purpose is to enable me to see that He can walk on the storms of my life right now. If we have a further goal in mind, we are not paying enough attention to the present time. However, if we realize that moment-by-moment obedience is the goal, then each moment as it comes is precious.

I am hardly in the midst of turmoil right now, but I have struggled a bit in recent months about my job and figuring out what I am doing, what my next steps are, what my purpose is in the midst of it all, etc. Her email was such an encouragement and a good reminder of waiting on the Lord, committing my plans to Him, and just living in moment by moment obedience...for a personality that is a compulsive planner at heart, this is so difficult sometimes. I get so focused on the future and what I am supposed to do next, that I too easily forget about where He has placed me right now. I want very much to serve and glorify Christ no matter where He places me- even if it seems like a strange place to be, even if I cannot see or understand fully the purpose. I want my life to be characterized by moment by moment obedience...

Encouragement For My Weary Heart

I shared a few days ago the struggle that I am having with my job. I have somehow hit a wall and am just not enjoying what I am doing. Don't get me wrong- I have a good job; I just think the reality of my circumstances hit me and I didn't really like what I saw. Again, I am not looking to leave anytime soon; I am just trying to sift through what parts of my heart are my own sinful discontent with circumstances and what parts are the Lord's work and teaching in my life.

This past week was particularly  difficult, mainly because I have been studying...which is the absolute last thing I want to be doing right now haha. And yet, the Lord has been gracious and good, providing peace and just the right amount of strength and encouragement. Some of the pressure I have felt in my job performance was eliminated today, of which I am so grateful. I think in a lot of ways I have felt somewhat indebted to my company this past year. They, after all, took a chance on me (in the middle of a hiring freeze) when no one else would. From the beginning, they have wanted to help train me in pretty much any area of my choosing. You just don't find that many places. While there are still expectations I have to meet, I was encouraged today to find out that much of the pressure I was feeling could be lifted.

My boss wants to support me in this job in any way he can, but he also understands if I don't really want/plan to make this a lifelong career. Either way, it's not going to matter and he is going to make it work for me. I have the added bonus that my boss is a believer, so he understands the struggle of finding the balance between doing well in the job God places you and following the Lord's leading in your life. He understands that my job is not the core of who I am and what I value. He is able to offer an extra measure of patience with me while I try to figure things out. I cannot tell you the encouragement that is to my heart!

So what now? Not a clue :) I don't know if the Lord is even leading me to anything else at this point. But with some of the pressure gone, I have the freedom and time to figure it out. I was reminded this morning that God placed me here for this time in my life- and He hasn't forgotten about me. He didn't just drop me here and leave; I am here for a reason. I may not always understand it, but I was reminded that He is still working and still has good things planned for me. I was encouraged that His purposes for me are not hinged on my career or even on my enjoyment of a job...which I knew, but somehow had lost sight of. I have to be willing to serve Him wherever I am, willing to be used in any way He sees fit...even if it doesn't look like I think it should.

Whirlwinds, Encouragements, and Prague

Wow! So much has happened...life has been one big whirlwind. I finally have a moment to breathe and reflect back. But even that moment seems too brief- go figure.

So that week that was split between october and november...I pretty much thought I was going to die. I had to get so much done that week before I left for Prague, and it was just unreal the amount of things there were. To put it in perspective- I was a CL for 2 years and had a few meltdowns during that time because of how overwhelming that job is when you are trying to be a student, attend church, and keep up with friends. I can say that week (and the one after Prague) was far worse than any of the meltdown times I had as a CL. That's saying a lot. Without exaggeration- I literally had more to do that week than I had hours in the day to do it. I got so little sleep that week- haha. It was pretty scary there for awhile...I definitely didn't even sleep the night before we left for Prague, simply because I hadn't had the time to pack. Oh dear...

But God was GOOD and pulled me through it (of course), and I spent the next week in Prague. But before I get to that, I have to praise God for some encouragement I received the night before I left...

So I called my parents the night before I left for Prague (I had to get the parent speech about not going anywhere by myself, making sure I took the right measures not to get pick pocketed...you know, the usual). To my surprise, my brother was home and wanted to talk to me (2 things that haven't occurred in a long time- and especially not at the same time). So he got on the phone...and oh my gosh, I am starting to cry just typing this. Haha- I am such a sap. I just really haven’t had the time to really let it sink in. I guess it’s finally hitting me and I am just so overwhelmed with joy. Anyway, God is doing His work, and I think my brother is back! Talking to him, I could hear a difference in his voice. The attitude was gone. There was genuine joy in his voice. And he couldn’t tell me fast enough about all that God has been doing. There is a renewed excitement in him about His relationship with God. He literally cannot get enough of Him. He literally has come to a point where nothing else matters to him except God. He literally aches for God. Which was exactly my prayer. I can’t even express in words how this makes me feel. This is something for which I have been praying for over a year. He and my parents actually met me at the airport in Austin when I got back from Prague (basically because they are amazing and really cute). Seeing him with this new air about him, getting a real hug from him…I don’t think I could ask for anything more. That made my entire semester. So thank you to everyone who have been praying with me for my brother. Please continue to pray for God’s work in his life, that Satan would not find any footholds.

And now Prague…I got to spend a week in the Czech Republic and didn’t have to pay for it. This makes me very happy. It was part of the B.E.S.T. program that I am in at the b-school. While we were there, we met with local business leaders to discuss the experiences they have had in the international arena (that was the "class" part of the trip). We met with the new US ambassador, which was really cool. And the rest of the time, we just got a tour of the city. It was amazing. It was pretty much a vacation. Which is just one of those sweet blessings that God planned ahead of time. The city was beautiful...it was like stepping back in time. Amazing architecture, cobblestone streets, intersting history...

We visited Prague Castle, St. Vitus' Cathedral, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, Skoda Automobile Plant, Terezin (a work camp during Nazi Germany time), the Jewish synagogue, the John Lennon peace wall...it was such a great experience. It was interesting to learn the history of the Czech people- it really is a sad and dark history. Which explains a lot about our experience. People weren't very friendly, they hardly ever smiled, they do not talk on public transportation (not like us loud Americans)...they are wary of foreigners and still have reminders around of the old regime. I learned a lot and definitely got bitten by the travel bug. I wanted to travel before...and this trip makes me want to even more. I want to go everywhere, learn everything. I really hope that that is part of God's plan for me somehow in my future. Parts of the trip were difficult...I was constantly on my knees asking for His wisdom, grace, and love. Just some expectations that were not met, some disappointments, some challenges of living out my faith in a world where it is not valued. He is good, and I just praise Him for the opportunities I was given. Here are some of my favorite pics from the trip:
