Beach Getaway

We spent this past week soaking up the sun and the cooler weather in San Diego! My parents were blessed with an awesome house rental on Coronado Island, so we got to enjoy a fun family vacation.

We spent a lot of time at the beach, which was awesome. The water was a little too cold for me, but Mike enjoyed the boogie board and the waves. I was just thankful for the opportunity to enjoy the sun, the crashing of the waves, and my book.

Not a bad view for the week

After a day at the beach, we headed back to the house for a homemade meal and some games. The weather was absolutely wonderful, so we got to enjoy dinner outside on the patio. Mike found a new card game called The Game, and we had a fun time learning and playing it.

On Sunday we took the ferry over to the mainland and walked along the pier.

Enjoying the ferry ride

Yep.

USS Midway {my parents toured this before we got to San Diego...too tight of quarters for this preggo!}

Ha!

Unconditional Surrender...and our re-enactment :)

On Monday, we headed to the San Diego Zoo. We got there early to beat the crowds, and it was so nice to walk the zoo in the cool of the morning.

This guy greeted us at the entrance. Apparently they just wander around the park...

Making the best of one of his least favorite places...

SUPER thankful for the escalators and moving walkways

So I know I posted my weekly bump photo, but I really took that banner photo before we left. So this is my real 22 week photo. Babies were actually hanging out at the beach :)

#22weeks

On Tuesday, Mike took a private surfing lesson! He has always been pretty athletic and adventurous, so I had no doubt he would do well with it. And he did! He got up on the board almost every single time, which the instructor said is most of the battle.

Learning the basics

On our last day, Mike rented a surfboard to practice his new surfing skills. Look at my sexy surfer dude :)

While he was swimming out on the waves, he saw a fin swim by and realized he was swimming with dolphins! A pod of dolphins came close to shore to play in the waves, and Mike wasn't too far from them!

On our first day in Coronado, we walked by MooTime Creamery and were instantly pulled in by the smell of their waffle cones. Their ice cream was SO good! On our last day, we were heading back from the beach, and Mike said that if there was a parking space in front of the ice cream shop, it was meant for us to have it again. Parking is at a premium in Coronado, so when there were 2 empty spaces in front of the shop, we couldn't say no :)  Mike enjoyed their waffle ice cream sandwich...ice cream between 2 mini Belgian waffles. So good!

On our last night, we headed back over to the mainland to enjoy dinner on the pier. We got to watch the sunset, and of course got our "dressed up" family photos for my mom.

Beautiful sunset on our last night

Probably my favorite photo of my parents :)

Love him so much :)

We had such a great trip, and we were so thankful for the time away. We had some good family time, and we were thankful for the opportunity to have a vacation before our little ones come.

5 Years Since Our Wedding Vows

It has been 5 years since we said "I do," 5 years since we promised to love and cherish one another for the rest of our lives. As we celebrate our anniversary, I can't help but feel like our wedding vows have been put to the test countless times in these 5 short years. It makes me wonder what the next 55 years will hold, but I pray we have that many years together, because I wouldn't want to face any of it with anyone else.

I have our vows hanging in our bedroom, so we are daily reminded of the promises we made to one another and before the Lord. But I thought our 5th anniversary would be a good time to reflect on them...

I, Erin, take you Mike to be my husband, my constant friend and my love. I promise to be your faithful partner,

in sickness and in health,
...My sweet husband has most definitely received the raw end of this deal. I managed to wipe out his entire health savings account {something he had saved over a period of years} in a matter of months, and I carve out a large part of our budget every month to stay as healthy as one can with an incurable autoimmune disease. While the Lord has granted grace and remission, it is still a constant hardship for both of us. Living with a chronic illness is always difficult, and it was something my husband had to learn how to deal with so early in our marriage. And something he will continue to have to deal with for the rest of my life. And yet he walks alongside with with grace and love and gentle care.

...And then there's infertility. It was an incredible loss for both of us, and we never realized the toll it would take on our hearts. But the Lord is good. No one ever wants to walk through infertility and loss, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But we are thankful for the story the Lord crafted for us, and I am so thankful for my husband who has been my constant rock and encouragement.

in plenty and in want,
...There have definitely been some lean times. With health expenses, infertility/adoption expenses, and times of unstable income, it has definitely made my budgeting/saver brain crazy at times. It's hard to tighten your budget, and then tighten it again, and then get that pesky hospital bill, and then lose your main source of income. And it has often been scary for my Type A {control-freak} brain. But when I look back at the past 5 years, the Lord has always provided everything we needed, and then some. While things may have been lean at times, we have never really been in true want, especially by a global standard. And I am thankful for a husband who pushes me to trust the Lord with our finances, to give generously even when things are tight, and to see that everything we have belongs to Jesus.

in times of joy and sorrow.
...There was joy and excitement in moving to McKinney and starting Redeemer Church. There was joy in seeing the Lord move in the lives of our people, joy in walking out our faith in such a tangible way. But there was also sorrow and hardship when the Lord asked us to let go of our dreams and our plans in McKinney. There was sorrow in saying goodbye and walking away from everything we had worked and hoped for.

...There was some sorrow in our financial situation and how our roles as income earners seemed {in my mind} skewed. I struggled with finding joy in my role, and struggled with finding a balance with my health. And I know my husband struggled with wanting to follow God's call to plant a church and provide for his family. And there was sorrow when income didn't come or was taken from us. But there was joy in our service, and there was joy when the Lord offered a change and a reversal of roles. And there is joy in how the Lord has abundantly provided in this new season.

...I mentioned infertility in the "sickness and health" section, but it fits here too. From the sorrow of finding out that we would not be able to have genetic children, to the sorrow of losing our babies, infertility stripped so much of our temporal joy. There has been sorrow in the waiting and sorrow in the continued "no" to our prayers for a family of our own. But there has been joy in the Lord's unique plan to grow our family, joy in watching our babies grow, and there has been an even deeper joy in trusting the heart of a good and gracious Father.

I promise to love you unconditionally, to encourage and support you, and to willfully submit to you as the church submits to Christ.
...I have not always done a great job at this, but I strive every day to be a good wife. I have never done it perfectly, but I wanted so much to encourage and support Mike's desire to lead and grow a church. I believed in his gifting and his call so much, that I was ready to follow him wherever the Lord might send him {even crazy cold Michigan}. And I was heartbroken when he had to walk away from pastoral ministry for a season. But I have seen a side of my husband that makes me so proud and humbled to be his wife. He has worked hard and made incredible sacrifices to take care of me and our little ones. He presses into Jesus when the call to ministry makes the daily grind at work difficult, and he patiently waits on the Lord's perfect timing for that. And I pray daily that the waiting would be short for him. I cannot wait to see where the Lord leads him next, and I am most excited about seeing him rock dad life :)

Before God, our family and our friends, I give you my hand, my heart, and my love, from this day forward for as long as we both shall live.
...Babe, I love you more every day, and I still cannot believe you are mine. When I think back over the last 5 years, my eyes can't help but fill with tears just thinking about the precious gift you are to me. You have loved me more than I could ever deserve, served me in countless ways, and led our family in a way that honors Jesus. I am so blessed to be your wife. Thank you for constantly pointing me to Jesus, for being my "constant friend and my love," and for loving me "sacrificially as Christ loves the church." You absolutely have my hand, my heart, and my love for my whole life.

22 Weeks

How far along? 22 weeks
Days since transfer: 136 days
Total weight gain: +15.0
Maternity clothes? Yep!  Those babies are filling out ALL kinds of maternity clothes haha
Sleep: Definitely not sleeping through the night anymore. It was a little easier to fall back asleep after getting up to pee, but if it's after 2am or 3am, then I'm up for the day. Babies seemed to be more active in the early morning hours this week :)
Best moment of the week: Receiving our first gift card in the mail! Such a sweet gesture...it's fun to see how many people already love our babies!
Cravings: Nothing really. Still enjoying my fresh fruit popsicles though!
Symptoms: Definitely feeling the weight of 2 babies on my abdomen. I am starting to feel it in my back, particularly by the end of the day. It's amazing to me how fast I am growing...it almost seems like I am growing by the hour some days haha.
Looking forward to: Celebrating our 5th anniversary; I can't believe it has been 5 years already!

-------

Size of baby? About the size of a spaghetti squash, water bottle, or American guinea pig :)
Development: When babies aren't sleeping, they are trying to touch anything they can: their faces, umbilical cord, each other...they are working on their physical abilities and motor skills. Their inner ears are developed, and they are starting to recognize my heartbeat and my voice! Each pancreas is busy creating their own hormones, and babies are starting to put on fat.
Heartbeat: Looking forward to hearing them again!
Movement: Definitely feeling them more consistently now. And I love that Mike can feel them too. They're still a little more elusive with him, so we have to catch them at the right time, but I'm sure it won't be too long before he can feel them more regularly too.
Gender: We're having a BOY and a GIRL :)

21 Weeks

How far along? 21 weeks
Days since transfer: 129 days
Total weight gain: +14.8
Maternity clothes? Yep! The challenge this week? Swimsuits. There's something quite hilarious about a preggo putting on a fabric that resembles a whale. Just saying...
Sleep: Sleep was more elusive this week. I found myself passing out pretty fast, but then waking to pee a few hours later, only to be wide awake. Like ready to start the day, do something productive, can't fall back asleep for several hours kind of awake. Several times I have woken up hungry {never in my life have I eaten in the middle of the night}. I'm hoping my good sleep comes back so I can have a little more time before this middle-of-the-night waking becomes my new normal ;)
Best moment of the week: Registering for babies! Such a fun day. One we weren't sure we would ever have, and one for which we are just so thankful.
Cravings: Popsicles! I have been making fresh fruit popsicles, and I want to eat them all day long. I don't {eat them all day long}, but it sure sounds nice on these hot summer days.
Symptoms: Baby Boy has either taken up residence on, or decided to constantly kick, my bladder, so I have made a lot of trips to the bathroom. This week I also started to feel "big." Which I realize is laughable since I am only halfway... I do pretty well through the morning, but by mid-afternoon, I am feeling more tired and my body feels the strain of two babies on my abdomen. I find myself stopping whatever I am doing to sit and relax until Mike gets home.
Looking forward to: Sitting on the beach with my book and an ice cold drink :)

-------

Size of baby? About the size of a banana, least weasel, or baseball cap
Development: Babies' taste buds are starting to develop, and they have their own little routines of sleep and play. They are super wrinkly right now, which will allow internal expansion and the baby fat to start settling in.
Heartbeat: Supposedly you can hear them now with a stethoscope...anyone have one we can borrow? :)
Movement: Definitely feeling them more. I got to feel someone's bout of hiccups this week!
Gender: We're having a BOY and a GIRL :)
