Summer Reading 2023

Even though we took a break from school for the summer {we won't school year round, at least right now}, we have kept up with our reading. I decided to make it fun for the kids, in an effort to keep them motivated. So I made these "Scoop Up a Good Book" sticker charts! I honestly didn't think they would get as excited about it as they did, so we filled up our sticker charts so much faster than I originally planned. Not a bad problem at all :)

All filled up and ready for our treats!

Eli and Maddie get a sticker for every Bob Book they read, and Aiden gets a sticker for every reading lesson he does {I started him on The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, like I did with Eli and Maddie last summer}. Daddy gets a sticker for every 30 minutes of reading he does, and I get a sticker for doing all the reading with the kids :) {I also do my own personal reading, but I like getting the reward as the reading teacher x3 haha}.

For our first round, the reward was to go get ice cream! We tried Bruster's Ice Cream for the first time, and it did not disappoint. The bonus? Aiden got to have his favorite: orange sherbet!

The kids were so excited and wanted to know what was next. So we all decided to start reading toward milkshakes! They filled that chart up just as fast, but then our schedules got crazy and we had to put off our treats. The kids were SO patient in waiting, but we finally were able to go get those long-awaited milkshakes.

We stuck to the tried-and-true Chick-Fil-A! And Daddy introduced them to the joy of dipping their french fries into their milkshakes haha. They licked their cups clean and were hopeful for seconds, so I think it's safe to say they were fans :)

Since we still had a good amount of time left in the summer, we wrapped up our summer reading with a third sticker chart: DONUT Forget to Read! :)

That wrapped up our summer pretty well, just in time to start school and get back into our more formal lessons. Of course, now they're wondering where their next sticker chart and prize are haha!

In addition to practicing our reading, we also made it through a few summer read-alouds:
  • My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett
  • Elmer and the Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett
  • The Dragons of Blueland by Ruth Stiles Gannett
  • Mrs. Piggle Wiggle by Betty MacDonald (*Side Note: this book was horrid; I don't know why it is on so many reading lists or why so many people love it for their kids! I really hated how both children and parents were portrayed, how much spanking was talked about in the book, and just didn't find it as "cute" as it is supposed to be.*)
  • The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
  • Surprise Island by Gertrude Chandler Warner
  • The Yellow House Mystery by Gertrude Chandler Warner
  • Mystery Ranch by Gertrude Chandler Warner
  • Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

It was a great summer of reading! :)
