Our Summer Before Kindergarten

I can hardly believe that Eli and Maddie are heading to Kindergarten in the fall. We have officially made the decision to homeschool for Kindergarten, so we are diving into a whole new adventure! Yes, we have technically been homeschooling for preschool, but it feels more real now when it actually "counts" haha.

We spent the last year prepping through a more intentional Pre-K program, and now we will spend the summer with a lighter time of learning. We're not necessarily doing an intensive summer school program, but I also want to keep them in a good rhythm of learning. We had a good routine for Pre-K, so I want to continue that through the summer.

Here's a look at what we will be walking through this summer:

Bible Time
Aside from reading our nightly Bible story, I want to start having a consistent Bible time in the morning, and I want to introduce more intentional prayer. To help establish that rhythm, we will read through the following:
  • What Every Child Should Know About Prayer by Nancy Guthrie
  • Window on the World: An Operation World Prayer Resource - we will use this companion resource to pray for a new country each week; this is a little above their level {a lot of facts about the countries}, so I hope to use this resource again as they get older. But for now, we will just use the guided prayer requests for the countries.
  • Around the World: Letters From Children Across the Nations from The Daily Grace Co- we will read these letters to match the country for which we are praying
  • Maps by Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielinska- another companion resource so the kids can see the countries for which we are praying on a map
  • The New City Catechism for Kids from the Gospel Coalition- we dropped the ball on these this past year, so we're going to start up again

Learning to Read!
We're easing our way into learning to read! We're going to take it slow and see how it goes this summer, but my kids have started showing an interest in learning. So I'm going to attempt to teach all 3 of them...so wish us luck :)
  • The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading by Jessie Wise
  • {Not Pictured} Bob Books- we will use these to practice reading

Science
Before we dive into any formal science curriculum, I want the kids to have a good biblical foundation/knowledge of how God created the world. So I thought this devotional could be an easy, summery on-ramp.
  • Indescribable: 100 Devotions About God and Science by Louie Giglio

Read-Alouds
For Pre-K, I started reading more chapter books to the kids. We will continue that through the summer with these two books.
  • Beatrix Potter: The Complete Tales- we already started this one, but we will finish it out before starting the next Read-Aloud
  • Little Pilgrim's Progress by Helen L. Taylor

We are also joining in with the Summer Book Club from For the Love of Homeschooling. Whichever books are available at the library will be the ones we read, and I will do one activity with the kids to go along with it.

-------

We will have our scheduled learning, but it's also summertime, so we will be spending most of our time outside, eating popsicles, and finding some fun summer adventures!

Here's to a great Summer before Kindergarten :)
